Today, we’re in the bedroom.
If she came over for dinner, Ms. Ridder might have a cow, because my bed is a whopping 36″ above the finished floor. It is a king-size, Swedish style four poster bed, very spare in decoration and very light in color, just like the rest of the room. I’ve had it for 16 years, and I am fully aware that before long, I will need to have a half-depth box-spring made for it. I don’t require a step-stool yet, but when I can’t hop up there easily anymore I will know it is time to make the change.
As for super sleek, extra low beds, there will be a time when their owners have to make adjustments, too. At a point, it becomes like trying to get out of a sports car in a mini-skirt. Nobody wants you to pull a Lohan or a back muscle. Really. Close your legs. Now!
Back to our story: Enjoy the bed you have, but keep the future in mind when buying a new one.
If you want to get an idea of what size is right for your room, try using cardboard boxes or a couple, or three chairs, as a template. You may like the look of two smaller benches combined better, as they can be easily pulled in another room as extra seating for guests, so save some time, space and money by working it out before you head out to shop. Keep the height in mind too. I recommend an 17″-20″ high seat, depending on how tall you are, for ease and comfort. Think dining room chair seat height. Easy on, easy off.
Light makes people look different too. Nobody looks better in a pea green haze–paging you, Linda Blair–especially not the windows in your house. If you’re going to use sheers, go with white or off-white and be consistent throughout your home. Also, think about how it looks from the street. It’s the first thing your guests see, so make an effort to leave a good impression.
Like Mr. Netto, I’m not fond of Pekingese size pillows either, but I’m not going to judge you if you like them. Who am I to do that? I’m the broad who sleeps with 9 pillows in a giant bed that’s 36″ off the floor, that’s who. Comfort is king in the bedroom and whatever makes you wake up happy is okay by me!
